Case Study 1
Garry was a horticultural trainee. Every time he returned from off the
job training he found some of his tools missing from his tool kit. When
he asked his workmates about this, no one knew anything about it. Garry
thought that they did know what was happening as he’d caught some
of them smirking. His lunch also regularly disappeared from the fridge.
Garry felt he was being targeted by his work mates. He had to spend time
searching for his tools and was worried that his employer would think
he was disorganised and wasting time. Garry started having arguments
with the work mates he suspected of being responsible for the missing
tools and lunches.
Case Study 2
Suzanne, an apprentice hairdresser, was required by her employer to
work through meal breaks on a regular basis. Suzanne asked to have lunch
breaks so she could eat lunch in the middle of the day and pay some bills
occasionally. The employer started making comments to another employee
that Suzanne wasn’t a team player and wasn’t pulling her
weight in the salon. The employer constantly found fault with Suzanne’s
work and Suzanne felt that she couldn’t do anything right. A few
weeks before Suzanne’s parent’s 20th wedding anniversary,
Suzanne asked her employer if she could take that Saturday off so she
could attend the lunch celebration with her family, friends and relatives.
Her employer started screaming at her, saying she was lazy and unreliable,
and she would never get a job in the industry.
